Christmas in September?

We know—September feels too early for twinkle lights, but your favorite camera brands clearly did NOT get the memo. Canon’s packing 7K into its tiniest cinema body yet, Nikon just snuck RED color science into a full-frame body, and Apple decided your phone deserves ProRes RAW.

Add in Resolve finally unlocking ProRes RAW natively (feels like collusion, hey?) and Kodak tinkering with VISION3 for the first time in decades—you know what, I’ll say it: this feels less like back-to-school and more like Christmas morning.

As always; thanks for being here. Dive in, get lost, and enjoy.

THE RUNDOWN:

PULSE CHECK

Pulse Check is our way of keeping a finger on the heartbeat of the creative industry. Everything from breaking news to announcements, or just videos that might have slipped under the radar, this curated list will keep you in the know.

  • Canon’s C50 is their most compact cinema body yet—7K RAW up to 60fps, Open Gate, Dual Base ISO. But with no IBIS, the internet’s split: dealbreaker or just rig it?

  • Nikon fires back with the ZR: 6K RAW, internal 32-bit float audio, and—big one—native R3D plus ProRes RAW. With RED’s color science and stabilization baked in, is Canon getting KO’d?

  • Resolve just granted a long-time wish: native ProRes RAW. No transcodes, no hacks—just import and grade. Filming in ProRes RAW suddenly feels viable.

  • Apple’s latest packs a unibody frame, 13–200mm fusion lenses, and ProRes RAW (even in Blackmagic’s Camera app). Add Apple Log 2 and a square front sensor, and this phone’s eyeing real set work.

  • Kodak quietly swapped VISION3’s rem-jet backing for a new anti-halation undercoat—same Kodak look, tougher stock. The question: will anyone notice on screen?

  • Sigma just rolled out three new full-frame lenses for Sony E and L-Mount: the 35mm f/1.2 DG II Art, the 135mm f/1.4 DG Art, and the 20–200mm f/3.5–6.3 DG Contemporary.

  • Nikon shooters—big news. Premiere Pro Beta now supports native N-RAW editing, reading files as REDLog3G10 directly in-app. Translation: no more third-party plugins or messy workarounds.

OFF-SCRIPT

Every now and then, it feels good to get lost down a few rabbit holes. Off-Script is our catch-all for exactly that; a random assortment of objects, products, music, books, tools, and inspiration we’re finding in our day-to-day.
